Distinguished and Famous people from Kalamunda
🌟 Frederick and Elizabeth Stirk
Frederick and Elizabeth Stirk built a wattle-and-daub cottage on their property in 1881, using materials from the surrounding land. The city’s history specifically records Elizabeth carting and mixing mud for the walls, alongside the timber framework. The cottage later passed to Charles Brooks, who operated a shop from an adjoining barn. Saved through community action and restored as a museum, it preserves a direct connection with the Stirk household. Their story gives Kalamunda’s early building history two names and a very practical account of shared work.
📚 Tom Millar
Tom Millar was born at Kalamunda in 1925 and attended Kalamunda State School before further education and army officer training. Service with the occupation force in Japan included an early visit to devastated Hiroshima, an experience that profoundly influenced him. Returning to university, he moved from soldiering into history, international relations and defence studies. He helped establish the Australian National University’s Strategic and Defence Studies Centre and became its director. His influential book Australia’s Defence brought historical, diplomatic and administrative questions into one study. Kalamunda is his birthplace and an early school community in a life that later examined Australia’s place in the world.
