Kalamunda was founded in the early 1890s during the Western Australian gold rushes. The town was originally named Seventeen Mile Rocks, as it was located 17 miles from Perth. In 1901, the name was changed to Kalamunda, a Noongar Aboriginal word meaning 'home in the forest' or 'a place in the hills'.
The town of Kalamunda has a population of around 7,000 people, and it serves as the hub for the surrounding suburbs and rural areas.
